For what to do in Tallinn for a day, build your route around the Old Town: begin at Town Hall Square, walk uphill to Toompea’s viewpoints, then choose a museum stop. The city centre is about an 8-minute walk from Center Hotel, a two-star hotel, making this a practical route to do on foot.

  • Start: Town Hall Square, a historic marketplace and the centre of the Old Town.
  • Walk: Continue to Kohtuotsa and Patkuli viewing platforms on Toompea Hill.
  • Choose: Visit the Photo Museum behind the Town Hall, or spend longer around the square.
  • Plan around: Town Hall, its tower and the museum have seasonal schedules and admission charges.
Start in central Tallinn

Start in central Tallinn

Begin your Tallinn itinerary in the city centre and head towards Town Hall Square, where the city’s medieval core comes into focus. The square has served as the centre of Tallinn’s Old Town and as a marketplace since the Middle Ages.

Raekoja plats, as the square is called in Estonian, is open around the clock and free to visit, according to Visit Tallinn. Take time to look around the square before going inside anywhere: Tallinn Town Hall stands at Raekoja plats 1, and its present form was completed in 1404. The building was first mentioned in 1322.

The Town Hall is in a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you want to visit its interior, make that decision early in the day and check its seasonal schedule before setting out.

From June through August, it opens to visitors on set days and hours; from September through May, visits are by appointment on weekdays. The attic is closed during appointment visits.

During the summer opening period, general admission is €7 for adults, with reduced admission of €5 for students, disabled people and seniors aged 65 or over.

A family ticket costs €15 for up to two adults and children up to age 19. Tallinn Card holders enter free during seasonal opening hours, except on closure dates and when receptions are being held.

Walk through Tallinn Old Town

Walk through Tallinn Old Town

Tallinn Old Town is easiest to explore on foot, with Town Hall Square providing a natural point to begin your walk. From the square, take the surrounding streets at an unhurried pace before continuing uphill to Toompea.

Tallinn Town Hall is one of the landmarks to look for as you cross the square. Its history reaches back to the first written mention in 1322, while the building’s current form dates to 1404. The square itself has remained a marketplace and central meeting place since the Middle Ages.

The House of the Blackheads, a historic guild house, is another Old Town landmark described in this guide to visiting Tallinn’s historic guild house.

If you’re visiting between June and August, the Town Hall’s opening days differ across the week: Monday to Thursday, it is open 11:00–18:00; Friday to Sunday, 11:00–16:00. Last entrance is 30 minutes before closing. It closes on 23 and 24 June and 20 August, and receptions can also affect access.

The Town Hall Tower has a separate seasonal schedule, opening daily from June through August, 11:00–18:00, with last admission at 17:30. It is closed on 23 and 24 June and 20 August, and visits by appointment are not available.

The tower rises 64 metres; reaching its bell chamber at 34 metres means climbing 115 steps on a narrow, steep spiral staircase.

For the tower, admission is €6 for adults and €4 for students and children. A combined Town Hall and Tower ticket costs €12 for adults and €8 at the reduced rate.

The Town Hall’s main floor is wheelchair accessible, but the upper floors and tower are not; there is no wheelchair-accessible toilet. Wheelchair users are asked to notify the Town Hall in advance.

Climb to the Toompea viewpoints

Climb to the Toompea viewpoints

Toompea Hill has two free viewing platforms that give you different angles over Tallinn’s historic centre. Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform is on the hill’s northern side at Kohtu tn 12, while Patkuli offers views of the medieval city wall, historic towers and the old Hanseatic town.

Both platforms are open 24 hours a day and free to visit, according to Visit Tallinn. You can visit Kohtuotsa first, then continue to Patkuli as you walk across Toompea. Patkuli also connects the hill with Toompark by Snelli Pond: its stairway, built in 1903, has 157 steps.

Allow time for the climb and the steps if you plan to descend by Patkuli’s stairway. The viewpoints work well as a walk after the square: take in the rooftops from Kohtuotsa, then head towards Patkuli for views that include the old city wall and towers.

Choose a museum or market stop

Choose a museum or market stop

The Photo Museum is a compact indoor stop behind Tallinn Town Hall, at Raekoja tn 6. It occupies a former medieval prison building and has exhibitions and displays of old cameras.

If you want to swap the museum for market browsing, this guide to Tallinn markets, including Balti Jaam and Keskturg, covers those two options.

Its schedule changes by season. From October through April, it is open Wednesday 11:00–18:00, Thursday 12:00–20:00, Friday and Saturday 11:00–18:00, and Sunday 11:00–16:00. From May through September, it is open Wednesday to Sunday, 11:00–18:00. Admission is €8; student admission is €6, and a family ticket is €16. Tallinn Card holders enter free.

Place the museum after your Town Hall Square walk if its opening day and hours fit your plans. If you’d rather keep the day outdoors, use the extra time for the Toompea viewpoints and the Old Town streets instead.

Finish with an easy evening plan

Keep the end of your day flexible by staying within the Old Town and its hilltop viewpoints. If you have not yet visited Kohtuotsa or Patkuli, both are open around the clock and free, so you can fit either into your remaining time.

For a final look over Tallinn, return to a viewpoint rather than adding another timed indoor visit. Patkuli’s outlook takes in the medieval wall, historic towers and old Hanseatic town; remember that its stairway down to Toompark has 157 steps.

Before you go: Town Hall and Photo Museum hours and admission are seasonal. Check the official Tallinn Town Hall and Photo Museum sites before you go.
